The Artist’s Journey to the Children’s Forest on Cortes Island

UPDATE: Following the magical and memorable official opening of the Artists’ Journey Art Auction at ArtSpring on Saltspring Island November 23, we received an overwhelming number of requests to keep the Artists’ Journey artworks online. In response to this, we will extend the online bidding into the New Year 2013, on pieces of artwork not sold to date. We invite you to peruse this beautiful collection of artwork ; new additions bringing the total number of donations to 30… such generosity!!!!! View the artwork here.

The Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society has been formed to purchase approximately 600 acres of ecologically significant forest lands on Cortes Island and place them in trust to the children of Cortes, in perpetuity. These forest lands are affectionately known on Cortes as, the ‘Children’s Forest.’

Cortes children have taken the lead in this vision and engaged in a Forest Alphabet art initiative which is documented in the book, Forest Alphabet: Artistic Visions of a Forest in Trust to the Children, a print-ready file awaiting publication. “Forest Alphabet features the original artwork and voices of 33 bright-eyed and beautiful children from Cortes Island speaking out for the protection, in perpetuity, of the Children’s Forest – a place they call home in the rainforests of British Columbia.” The sales of Forest Alphabet will be used for promotion and fundraising towards purchase of the Children’s Forest. The book is endorsed by Robert Bateman, Tzeporah Berman and Ann Mortifee.

The Artist’s Journey brought visiting artists to the Children’s Forest in the summer of 2012, where they were joined by local artists who created beautiful works of art inspired by the forest. These works of art have been donated to raise the funds necessary to publish Forest Alphabet. The excitement has spread to Saltspring Island where an art auction will be held for the Children’s Forest.

THE ARTIST’S JOURNEY ART AUCTION will be officially opened by Ann Mortifee, honourary director of the Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society, at 3 pm on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Saltspring’s Artspring Centre.

The public is invited to join Ann Mortifee and husband Paul Horn for afternoon tea in the gallery while viewing the artwork. Ann will speak at 7 pm on her venture into the Trust for Sustainable Forestry and children of Cortes will end the evening by announcing the auction winners at 9 pm. Artists of all disciplines have contributed to the auction, making for an exceptionally interesting and eclectic collection of artwork.
